Discover the history, anecdotes, and curiosities of the oldest city in the Western world.
With a cheerful and knowledgeable guide who will show you every corner
I will meet you at the Town Hall of Cádiz and we will move on to the Barrio del Pópulo, the oldest part of the city. Watch out, because here you will discover how some of the most important chapters of Cadiz’s history were woven.
Shortly after, we will make a stop at the Old Cathedral, a place that, although at first it does not call our attention, tells us a lot about the religious roots of the city.
As we walk through Little Havana you will realize the influence that the Discovery of America had on Cádiz. A historical connection with the New World so profound that it has shaped the idiosyncrasy of Cadiz (and even its speech!).
We will continue to the majestic New Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Americas. Cathedral of the Americas. You will recognize it immediately with its golden dome and its orientation towards the port; a symbol of welcome for those arriving by sea.
But do not be fooled by their appearance, because thanks to them you will understand very well that all that glitters is not gold.
From there we will enter the bustling Plaza de las Flores where the Mercado de Abastos is located. At this stop we will talk a little about the varied gastronomy of Cádiz and I will give you recommendations of places to eat. Then we will pass by the Tavira Tower where I will tell you why it has always been and still is the most important lookout tower in the city.
On our way, we cross the historic Calle Ancha, in the heart of the Merchants’ Quarter, where the rich merchants of the Indies left their mark (and I’ll show you how to recognize their houses).
The last stop of this free tour of Cadiz will be the Plaza de España, in front of the Monument to La Pepa.
We will relive how Cadiz became a haven of freedom, being the only city that remained free during the Napoleonic invasion. We will remember how the city resisted the long siege and the continuous bombardment without surrendering and you know what they say: ” With the bombs that the braggarts throw, the Cadiz women make themselves into ringlets…”.
To find out the rest, you will have to join one of our upcoming groups.
Meet us at Plaza San Juan de Dios, next to the City Expert kiosk, right in front of City Hall.
I will be there 10 minutes before the start of the tour, carrying a white banner with the yellow Destination Cadiz Tours logo.
Remember to be punctual, because time flies!
I'm going to tell it to you in such a way that you will live it, feel it and even imagine that you are right there, in the middle of the historical moment. You'll be hooked!
Throughout the tour I will show you visual material to recreate what some places were like in the past.
Curious travelers eager to learn more about Cádiz, who knows if you might make a new friend from here?
This means that, at the end of the tour, you decide how much you want to contribute as a tip. I only ask that, when that time comes, you take into account the effort, time and love that I put into every detail so that you enjoy the history of Cadiz as much as I do.
If we don't reach that number, don't worry! You always have the option to book a private tour by clicking here , which has no minimum number of attendees and is totally customized to your preferences.
If you are a larger group (7 people or more), you will need to book a private tour (from 10€/person), specially adapted for you. In case the group is divided into smaller reservations, the same group policy will apply.
Wear comfy shoes and bring water—it’s a walking tour, and staying hydrated is key.
If you’re visiting in summer, pack light, wear a hat, and prepare for Cádiz’s sunny vibes. Because even if we avoid the sun as much as possible, Cadiz always has its good dose of heat.
If it rains, we will go ahead with the free tour of Cadiz as long as there are no weather alerts. If Napoleon couldn’t take the city, a downpour won’t, right?
Watch out for the famous Levante wind! If it’s blowing, secure your cap and leave your billowy skirts at home to avoid any mishaps.
Yes, in the routes I offer there are no architectural barriers that make it difficult for people with reduced mobility.
